Central University of Venezuela

The Central University of Venezuela (UCV) is a public university of Venezuela, being one of the largest student population and productive importance. Founded in 1721, it is the oldest institution of higher education in the country. Its main office, the University City of Caracas, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.

According to a study conducted at the Latin American level by QS World University Rankings for 2016, the UCV is ranked number 1 nationally, while ranking 18th in Latin America.1

History

In the seventeenth century a cultural and scientific movement took place in Venezuela, which led to the founding of the Colegio Seminario de Caracas in 1673, which was officially named Colegio Seminario de Santiago de León de Caracas, under the patronage of Santa Rosa de Lima, for Which was also known as Colegio Santa Rosa. On December 22, 1721, by means of a Certificate issued by King Felipe V of Spain, the Royal University of Caracas was created with a category equivalent to the Royal University of Santo Domingo and on December 18, 1722, through the Apostolic Bull of Innocent XIII, Becomes Pontifical and officially becomes the Real and Pontifical University of Caracas.3 At first, classes of theology, medicine, philosophy and law were given exclusively in the Latin language. It was called "Real and Pontifical" for being under the tutelage and protection of the Spanish Monarch and the Supreme Pontiff.4

The new university was governed by the statutes of the Royal University of Santo Domingo while the same ones were not available, because they were elaborated. The initial seat of the university was the chapel of the Colegio Seminary Santa Rosa and it was until 1786, year in which it is transferred to the convent of San Francisco. In this last seat it stays until 1953, when the transfer takes place to the University City of Caracas. The San Francisco Convent was repaired and became the Palace of the Academies.

Faculties

The Faculties are integrated by Schools or Careers, these being the places where the teaching function at the undergraduate level is exercised. Each faculty is totally independent of the others, focusing each one on their particular areas of knowledge. Although each faculty is autonomous, there is a program called PCI (Interfaith Cooperation Program) that allows students of one faculty to see classes of subjects of another faculty, if it allows so the curriculum of each race. Some schools may award more than one degree, and are also made up of research groups (Departments and Chairs) of Research and Extension.
